Jorge Posada’s Yankee Debut

It’s the 14th anniversary of Jorge Posada’s first appearance in the big leagues, on September 4, 1995. Like Derek Jeter’s, it came against the Mariners. On the 1st, the N.Y. Daily News had said of the September call-up:

“Posada, a 24-year old switch-hitting catcher, was recalled after last night’s game as Joe Ausanio was sent down. Making that move allows Posada to be eligible for the postseason, giving Showalter something he’s been looking for all year a third catcher. Now, if the situation calls for either Jim Leyritz or Mike Stanley to pinch-hit, Showalter does not have to worry.”

Then, on the 5th, the Daily News relegated his debut to a game notes tidbit:
“Three players Yankees C Jorge Posada and Mariners Ps Jim Mecir and Scott Davison made major-league debuts. Randy Johnson was first to greet both pitchers when they returned to dugout after their first innings.”

(The Yankees beat the Mariners, 13-3, at Yankee Stadium: Posada came in for Jim Leyritz to catch the bottom of the 9th.)
