Floyd Caves “Babe” Herman

Babe Herman died just after the 1987 Thanksgiving, on November 27. His foibles with the Dodgers are famous, but he also hit for the cycle twice in a single season, and is one of two players to do that three times in a career. He hit the first night game home run; it came in 1935 against the Dodgers, for the Cincinnati Reds. A son, Charles Herman, said his dad got his nickname in the minors, when Babe Ruth was the big star of the majors: “He was put in to pinch-hit, and the first time he got a hit, the manager of the club said, ‘You’re my babe.”’
