Barry Bonds’ Debut in the New York Times

Below is the full text of the first mention the New York Times made of Barry Bonds. The dateline is May 7, 1986.

SPORTS PEOPLE; In Father’s Footsteps: Barry Bonds, the son of the former major league outfielder Bobby Bonds, drove in seven runs for Hawaii on Monday with a grand slam and two singles in a Pacific Coast League game at Calgary, Alberta, that Hawaii won, 18-8. Bonds, 21 years old, was drafted in the first round last June by the Pittsburgh Pirates and hit .299 with 13 homers in 71 games with Prince William of the Class A Carolina League. In three seasons at Arizona State University, the 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound outfielder hit .347 with 45 home runs, 175 runs batted in and 57 stolen bases.Read more about Bonds’ early career here, here, and here.
