I was fortunate, as a Cub fan, to receive a Blue Ribbon for best Groomed Dog at a small fair in Southern California presented by Ken Hubbs and then got to visit his home in Colton. I was about 11 and remember him as a really great guy. I was heart sick when he died.

I met Johnny Mostil at White Sox boys camp in 1967. He said his right fielder had a bum leg and he said he would to try to catch anything that came his way. There was a high foull ball hit and he he had just stepped over the foul line when he caught the ball.

Vada Pinson was my hero growing up. I can’t tell you hoe many fights I got into with my friends at school when I dared to say he was every bit as good and maybe better than wilie Mays. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
when he was a batting coach with the Tigers Skeeter Barnes got me his autograph on a Post Cereal baseball card. It remains one of my most prized posessions.

Good story, but I also was at the game working for the Reds. I was actually on the dugout and there were two guys that jumped the rail right at Mrs. Schott’s seat. She had left the game, because of the rain delay. Many fans such as you and you grandfather were shooed from those seats. The guys that jumped on the field were taken down by the stadium director and police. Also Franco was a lefty……

Thanks for posting this! Steve Carlton is my favorite baseball player, and it’s always interesting to read interviews with him. He’s a very smart, very articulate man. Do you have the entire article that Frank Dolson wrote in 1988? I’ve tried searching for it, but I haven’t been able to find it.
