Some Great Pittsburgh Pirates

This post celebrates the Pirates finally getting past the .500 record in a season by listing some of the greats, or at least very goods, in franchise history.

First position players:
Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell, Barry Bonds, Roberto Clemente, Paul Waner, Arky Vaughan, Max Carey, Ralph Kiner, Fred Clarke, Bill Mazeroski, Tommy Leach, Dave Parker, Andy Van Slyke, Omar Moreno (for his steals-Moreno had seasons of 96, 77, 71, and 60, easily the best marks in Pirates history), Brian Giles, Pie Traynor, Lloyd Waner, Jake Stenzel, Jason Bay, Kiki Cuyler

And in pitching:
Wilbur Cooper, Babe Adams, Bob Friend, John Candelaria, Vern Law, Rip Sewell, Sam Leever, Deacon Phillippe, Vic Willis, Roy Face, Kent Tekulve, Bob Veale, Lefty Leifield, Doug Drabek, Ed Morris

Clearly the Pirates have had more great hitters than great pitchers.

  1. Nice list. I might have added Al Oliver as well. And what, no Bobby Bonilla? (As a Mets fan, I’m perfectly happy to forget about him.)
